Yashasvi Jaiswal has been a regular mainstay in the India Cricket Team since his advent in Team India. But former India star Dinesh Karthik believes the young southpaw will be a back-up opener for the ICC Champions Trophy. Karthik believes that Shubman Gill is slated to open the innings for India with skipper Rohit Sharma.
The Men in Blue will look to field a strong side in the ICC tournament. And as per the plan goes, Yashasvi Jaiswal could find himself warming the bench. In terms of ODIs, it will be the more experienced Shubman Gill who will get the nod ahead of the young southpaw.
“Yes, Jaiswal has a great opportunity to be the backup opener and will get his opportunity soon if Shubman doesn’t go as well as expected. And India has a very solid middle order as well,” Dinesh Karthik told Cricbuzz.
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have a strong bonding in ODIs as has been the case over the last few years. Even in the ODI World Cup 2023, the duo gave India comfortable starts in the tournament. As for the Champions Trophy, there would be just 3 group stage matches.
Dinesh Karthik believes that India won’t experiment much and go with their tried and tested duo of Rohit and Gill. “In the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, they (India) are just going to be playing three more games (against England at home in February). And I am pretty confident it’s going to be Rohit and Shubman opening in the Champions Trophy,” Karthik added.
