Ever since Gautam Gambhir left the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as a mentor, the northern IPL franchise has been ‘mentor-less’! However, it looks like the man they are targeting is another legend in Zaheer Khan. As per reports, the franchise is in talks of the former Indian pacer to join the support staff ahead of IPL 2025.
Zaheer Khan back in IPL action?
According to Cricbuzz, Zaheer Khan is in advanced negotiations to take on the role of mentor at LSG. Gambhir, who served as a mentor, and Morkel, the team’s bowling coach, have both departed the franchise to join the Indian national team setup. Their absence has left a gaping hole in the Super Giants’ coaching staff.
Zaheer is being considered not only for the mentor role previously held by Gambhir but also to share his expertise with the team’s bowlers. His strong resume and abilities to nurture Indian talents are expected to make him a crucial bridge between players and the franchise management.

The 45-year-old has a proven track record as a mentor, having previously worked with the Mumbai Indians (MI), where he shared his expertise with the likes of Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult. In fact, Zaheer was also considered a potential bowling coach for the Indian team under Gautam Gambhir, the role which has eventually went to Morne Morkel.
If the deal is finalized, Zaheer will join a strong coaching staff at Lucknow Super Giants, including head coach Justin Langer, and experienced assistants like Adam Voges, Lance Klusener, and Jonty Rhodes. Zaheer’s illustrious playing career, which saw him represent India in 92 Tests, 200 ODIs, and 17 T20Is, that saw him garner as many as 610 international wickets!
