‘Desi Ande, Murgi’ is Arshad Nadeem’s gold medal winning diet

Arshad Nadeem continues to train at his village school whenever he visits, guided by his coach. Despite the financial struggles, including high gas bills that forced the family to use a coal pit for cooking, Nadeem's determination remained unshaken.

In a stunning display of athleticism, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem claimed the gold medal in javelin at the Paris 2024 Olympics, delivering a throw of 92.97 meters. This remarkable achievement not only set a new Olympic record but also earned Pakistan its first-ever individual gold medal. India’s Neeraj Chopra, who previously held the title, secured the silver medal with a throw of 89.45 meters, while Grenada’s Anderson Peters took bronze with a throw of 88.54 meters. Nadeem credits his unique diet, rich in desi chicken, eggs, and ghee, for his exceptional athletic performance.

Secret behind Arshad Nadeem’s success: ‘Desi’ Diet

Arshad Nadeem’s victory was fuelled by a diet deeply rooted in traditional Pakistani cuisine. Speaking to Ufone, Nadeem revealed, “I totally have a desi diet. Desi Murgi (chicken), Desi Anda (egg), Desi Ghee. Agar uske saath lassi hoo jaae to best hai (If I had Lassi along with it, then it’s the best).”

This simple yet nutritious diet, rich in protein and healthy fats, played a significant role in his physical preparation and ultimate success on the world stage.

Despite facing financial hardships, Nadeem’s family prioritized his diet, ensuring he had access to essential nutrients. Their unwavering support and sacrifices have played a crucial role in his journey to the top.

Historic Win for Pakistan

Arshad Nadeem’s gold marks a monumental moment for Pakistan, which has historically excelled in field hockey but has only produced three individual Olympic medalists. Nadeem now joins the ranks of wrestler Muhammad Bashir, who won bronze in 1960, and boxer Hussain Shah, who secured bronze at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

With his victory, Nadeem has brought Pakistan its first Olympic gold in any individual sport, a feat that has filled the nation with pride.

From Humble Beginnings to Olympic Glory

Arshad Nadeem’s journey to the top is one of perseverance and dedication. Growing up in a modest village, Nadeem was inspired by watching locals engage in tent pegging, a sport that requires precision and skill similar to javelin throwing. Initially, Nadeem played tape-ball cricket before discovering his true passion for javelin.

Despite financial struggles, his family, particularly his uncle, ensured that Nadeem received a diet rich in milk and ghee, vital for his development as an athlete.

Even when faced with injuries, Nadeem’s commitment never wavered. He spent time at home studying javelin techniques, often drawing inspiration from videos of Neeraj Chopra. His uncle Ashraf recalled, “When he was at home during the injury, he would talk about javelin and the similarities between tent pegging and javelin. He would tell us that it’s as precise as tent pegging and the right angle and velocity have to be achieved in javelin too.”

Overcoming Adversity to Achieve Olympic Success

Arshad Nadeem’s family faced significant financial challenges, with his father, a mason, supporting a large family on a modest income. Despite these hardships, they prioritized Nadeem’s nutrition and training. “We have seen days when I would earn 300-400 rupees a day and had to support nine beings at home. But we made sure that Arshad and his siblings got milk and ghee,” his family shared.

Arshad Nadeem continues to train at his village school whenever he visits, guided by his coach. Despite the financial struggles, including high gas bills that forced the family to use a coal pit for cooking, Nadeem’s determination remained unshaken. His journey from humble beginnings to Olympic champion is a testament to his resilience and the unwavering support of his family.
