PM Modi calls Harmanpreet Singh ‘sarpanch sahab’, delegates task to retiring PR Sreejesh

Indian hockey team achieved a historic feat at Paris Olympics, winning two bronze medal at back-to-back campaigns for the first time in 52 years.

Following Indian hockey team’s remarkable win, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, spoke to the entire team and offered a massive congratulations. The Harmanpreet Singh-led team upstaged Spain by 2-1 to bag the 4th Bronze medal for Indian contingent at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

PM Modi speaks with Harmanpreet & Sreejesh

Right when Indian skipper Harmanpreet said hello, the PM responded by saying ‘Sarpanch Sahaab’, which basically means ‘Skipper’ in English. Following that the entire team and Modi himself burst into a laughter. He then congratulated Harmanpreet and the entire team and applauded their spirit, especially their performance against Great Britain. In their quarter-final game against GB, India were one man down and showed absolute courage to beat them in a penalty shootout.

Task for PR Sreejesh

PR Sreejesh was the man for India, who put up a heroic performance throughout this campaign. Winning the Bronze medal was an emotional moment for Sreejesh himself, who announced that this would be his final dance. Modi took a moment to talk to keeper Sreejesh as well and funnily enough, gave him a retiring task as well.

You (Sreejesh) have to build a new team, brother,” said Modi to Sreejesh, who played over 300 matches for India. The 36-year-old accepted the challenge gleefully.
