India’s only seeded female wrestler, Antim Panghal, lost her first bout 10-0 in the Round of 16 against Turkey’s Zeynep Yetgil on Wednesday. It has been a dismal day for India in wrestling; following Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification, all eyes were on Antim to win her first bout and keep India’s medal hopes alive. Can she still has the chance to compete, let’s see?
How Antim Panghal still has chance to win medal in Paris Olympics?
Antim is out of the Paris Olympics 2024 as her opponent was eliminated in the quarterfinal match. If Zeynep had made it to the final, Antim would still have had a remote chance of winning a medal in the repechage stages.
How repechage in wrestling works?
Wrestlers who advance to the final send their defeated opponents to the repechage round, giving them a chance to compete for the bronze medal.
In wrestler A’s bracket, W, X, Y, and Z face off in the repechage. W faces X in the first round, with the winner advancing to face Y in the second round. Z, the semifinal loser, competes for the bronze medal against the winner of the second round.
The repechage procedure is similar for wrestler B’s bracket.
