‘I am speechless’: Vinesh Phogat’s uncle Mahavir Singh Phogat breaks down after wrestler’s disqualification

Vinesh Phogat's Olympic dreams were shattered when she failed to meet the weight requirement on the morning of her highly-anticipated 50kg gold medal match at the Paris Olympics, leading to her disqualification from the competition.

In an unfortunate turn of events for Vinesh Phogat, the Indian wrestler has been ruled out of the Paris Olympics due to being overweight in the prescribed 50 kg category. On Wednesday, her weight was found to be approximately 100 grammes over the limit. Consequently, she was disqualified from the Olympic women’s wrestling competition.

The Indian Olympic Association has confirmed Vinesh’s disqualification, meaning she will not be able to compete in the final of the 50kg category women’s wrestling, scheduled for Wednesday night, and will not receive a medal.

Upon hearing this unfortunate news, her uncle, Mahavir Singh Phogat, broke down in tears.

The former wrestler and coach expressed his disappointment, saying, “I am speechless. The entire country was expecting a gold medal. While rules are in place, it is usual practice to allow wrestlers who are 50-100 grams overweight to compete. Bajrang informed me of the news this morning. I urge the people of the country not to lose hope; she will undoubtedly bring home a medal in the future. I will prepare her for the next Olympics.”

What happened to Vinesh Phogat?

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said on Monday, “It is extremely regrettable that Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the 50kg category of women’s wrestling due to excess weight. Despite all efforts, her weight was found to be a few grams over the 50kg limit during the morning weigh-in.”
