Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50kg freestyle event ahead of her gold medal match at the Paris Olympics 2024. The Indian wrestler was found to be 100g overweight for her category, ending her Olympics journey before she could compete for the gold medal.
“It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand,” Indian Olympic Association said in a statement.
Will Vinesh Phogat get a medal?
A disqualified athlete does not receive a medal. Therefore, Vinesh will not be awarded a silver or bronze medal following her disqualification.
According to the weigh-in rules by United World Wrestling, “If an athlete does not attend or fail the weigh-in (the 1st or the 2nd weigh-in), he will be eliminated of the competition and ranked last, without rank.”
