Dinesh Karthik to become first Indian player in SA20, signs with Paarl Royals

39-year-old Dinesh Karthik has played over 400 T20 matches and scored more than 7,000 runs in the format.

Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik is set to become the first Indian player to feature in the SA20, joining Paarl Royals as an overseas player for the upcoming season starting January 9. This will be Karthik’s first tournament appearance since his retirement from Indian cricket in June, on his 39th birthday.

Karthik’s recent career and role with RCB

Karthik, who has played 180 international matches for India, last appeared in the IPL 2024 with Royal Challengers Bangalore. He is now signed as a mentor and batting coach for the franchise. Known for his cricketing acumen, Karthik has also been active in broadcasting, currently covering The Hundred for Sky Sports.

T20 expertise

Karthik, with experience in 401 T20 matches, has played for six IPL teams, including leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). His fitness and consistency are notable, having missed only two matches across 17 IPL seasons.

BCCI Regulations only allow retired players

According to BCCI regulations, only retired Indian players are permitted to participate in overseas T20 leagues. Last year, Ambati Rayudu played for St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the CPL, while Robin Uthappa and Yusuf Pathan featured for Dubai Capitals in the ILT20. Suresh Raina was with Deccan Gladiators in the Abu Dhabi T10 two years ago.

Paarl Royals’ retentions

Paarl Royals have retained captain David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, and Andile Phehlukwayo for the new season. Despite making the Qualifiers in the last SA20 edition, the Royals faced five consecutive losses, including a nine-wicket defeat in the Eliminator against Joburg Super Kings.
