Why is Indian team wearing three-star jersey in ODI series vs Sri Lanka?

Why does the Indian team’s jersey have three stars in the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka, and what is the significance?

The Indian cricket team’s jersey has left fans puzzled as it features three stars, whereas just a few days ago, during the T20I series against Sri Lanka, Team India wore a jersey with two stars. This discrepancy has raised questions, especially since India has won the ODI World Cup only twice. Why, then, is there a third star on the jersey?

The last time the Indian team played an ODI was in December 2023 in South Africa, where they won the series 2-1, thanks to Sanju Samson’s heroic century. After that, the focus shifted to T20s due to the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies, which India won for the second time. Now, with the Champions Trophy on the horizon, the priority is back on the 50-over format.

The jersey quickly garnered attention when Sri Lanka came to bat, as the Indian team not only wore the unique jersey but also sported black armbands to pay tribute to Anshuman Gaekwad, who passed away at the age of 71. However, the three-star jersey shocked everyone. Fans started speculating about its significance, and many believe the three stars represent India’s victories in the 1983 World Cup, the 2011 World Cup, and the 2007 T20 World Cup. If this is the case, the 2024 T20 World Cup win should also be included.

Interestingly as of now, no official explanation has been provided by the BCCI or the kit makers regarding this anomaly. It is possible that the ODI kit is yet to be updated, which might explain why the 2024 triumph hasn’t been added. Also, India’s recent 4-1 victory in the T20I series saw jerseys with two stars, following the tour of Zimbabwe where only one star was featured
