Badminton history in Olympics
Badminton was first included in the Summer Olympics in 1972 as a demonstration sport. Two decades later, in 1989, the sport was formally added to the Olympic program. It had its competitive debut at the 1992 Summer Olympics, where four events featuring singles and doubles competitions for men and women were staged. Each event saw the awarding of four medals, including two bronzes. had five events in 1996, including mixed doubles, at the next Games. Since 1996, the only person to win the bronze medal is the winner of a playoff between the two semi-final losers. This format will be used for the Olympics in 2020.
