Reasons why DC might appoint Sourav Ganguly as head coach in IPL 2025

With Ricky Ponting leaving the head coach position of Delhi Capitals, the important role for IPL 2025 will need to be filled. Will it be Sourav Ganguly?

After helping the Delhi Capitals as head coach, former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting’s contract has ended after seven long years. With speculation rife about who could be the next DC coach. The franchise, which is popular in the IPL due to players like Rishabh Pant and David Warner who have mesmerized fans with their performances over the years, now needs a coach.

As IPL 2025 rumors begin to circulate with the mega auction approaching, one name that is gaining traction for the DC head coach position is Sourav Ganguly. The former India captain and current Delhi Capitals Director of Cricket, Ganguly, is believed by many cricket fans to be the best contender for this role. Even he himself showed his interest in being a head coach. If Ganguly is indeed the top choice, he could well become the next head coach of DC in the IPL 2025.

But before we speculate anything, here are few reasons why people believe he is a strong replacement for Ponting.

Reasons why Sourav Ganguly is best fit for head coach post at DC in IPL 2025

Vast mentoring experience to DC in IPL

Sourav, who has been with the Delhi Capitals since 2019 as a mentor, initially stepped down from the role after he became the BCCI President. However, in 2023, he reunited with the franchise as Director of Cricket. Ganguly, with his extensive experience and understanding of the Delhi Capitals’ game, is familiar with a side that possesses a lot of talent but has often made mistakes at crucial moments in IPL matches.

If Sourav Ganguly takes charge, there is no doubt that the team will look to step up, as he understands their game really well. With the mega auction approaching, we may see a lot of shuffling on the side, but a few players are likely to be retained. Player like Rishabh Pant could be retained, or perhaps even others.

It will be interesting to see, but as of now, their retention seems possible. Since Ganguly understands them really well, it will undoubtedly be easier for him to gel with this franchise compared to others. Also, he has been with the team for the past few years, so there is no question that the transition will be smooth from Ricky Ponting to him.

Best man-manager in IPL & international cricket

With 197 total matches as captain in international cricket and 98 wins in his overall record, there has never been any doubt about Sourav Ganguly’s leadership. He was instrumental in instilling a solid attitude within the Indian cricket team, which is still praised by many.

From Yuvraj Singh to Harbhajan Singh to MS Dhoni, no one fails to acknowledge the influence of the “Prince of Calcutta.” Ganguly was the first in Indian cricket to introduce a strong, aggressive culture, and this was largely due to his exceptional man-management skills. He understood that managing players effectively in various formats was more important than merely tweaking their technique.

In the DC team, several players have shown the same respect to Ganguly as former Indian players have in the past. He also shares a strong bond with Rishabh Pant, which is likely a reason why he is expected to replace Ponting. Considering the need for transition and adjustments within the team, especially given their history of faltering at crucial moments in the tournament, there is no doubt that Ganguly could address the inconsistency issues of the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025.
