Gareth Southgate steps down as England manager after Euro Cup final loss

After painful Euro Cup final loss in consecutive seasons, Gareth Southgate steps down from his role as England Football Team manager

England Football Team manager Gareth Southgate has decided to step down from his post. 2 days after the painful loss in the Euro Cup finals against Spain, the English gaffer leaves his pace. With 102 games managed and 8 years in charge, Southgate will now be looking for the next adventure in his career.

Reports claimed that Southgate would decide on his future in a couple of days. After England’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro Cup finals, the former England gaffer said, he would take sometime to reflect and make up his mind.

Gareth Southgate steps down as England Manager

“As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all,” Gareth Southgate said in a statement.

“But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager,” Southgate concluded.

Southgate managed 102 matches for England where he won 61 games and lost just 17. In fact the Three Lions considerably improved under his reign but always fell shy of a silverware. Case and point remains for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup, where England finished fourth and reached the quarters respectively.

But England were impressive in the Euros. Back in 2021 they played the finals, losing to Italy in penalties. Lastly a couple of days back, the Three Lions lost their consecutive finals, when Spain defeated Harry Kane and Co by a slender 2-1 margin.
