Not Sourav Ganguly, Delhi Capitals looking for Gautam Gambhir-like head coach for IPL 2025

Delhi Capitals recently released Ricky Ponting as their head coach after the Australian failed to qualify the franchise in last three editions.

After seven years, Delhi Capitals (DC) have bid adieu to head coach Ricky Ponting. Now, they’re on the lookout for a coach who’s super hands-on and lives and breathes cricket – someone like Gautam Gambhir, who’s just taken the reins as Team India’s head coach.

DC want Gambhir-like coach

The franchise wants a coach who’s all about digging deep, following the game obsessively, and making informed decisions. They need someone who can bring some much-needed stability to the team and make things happen.

According to News18 journalist Sahil Malhotra, DC are looking for a coach who follows both international and domestic cricket aggressively, keeping track of players and making informed decisions. This approach is similar to Gambhir’s mentorship style, which ultimately saw him gain success with both LSG and KKR.

Ganguly vs Ponting!

The search for a new head coach comes after Ponting’s seven-year tenure ended without securing the coveted IPL trophy. Despite reaching the 2020 final, the team’s performance in subsequent seasons was disappointing, failing to qualify in three consecutive seasons. Sourav Ganguly, Delhi Capitals’ Director of Cricket, had openly criticized Ponting’s performance, stating that he didn’t do anything great for the team.

While Ganguly himself advocated for the head coach role, it seems that the franchise wants a dedicated coach who can focus solely on just one role. Moreover, the DC management wants a long-term solution rather than a stop-gap arrangement, especially with the new cycle beginning after the mega auction later this year.

By looking for a coach with a similar vibe to Gautam Gambhir, Delhi Capitals are showing they mean business. They want someone who can replicate Gambhir’s success and bring some serious glory to the franchise. Watch this space!
