Manpreet Singh is ‘thinking’ Paris Olympics 2024 as his last hurrah

India faces a formidable challenge in the Paris Olympics, drawn in a tough pool alongside Australia, defending champions Belgium, Argentina, and New Zealand.

Indian hockey team midfielder Manpreet Singh has hinted that the upcoming Paris Olympics could mark the end of his illustrious Olympic journey. The veteran player, who has been an integral part of the Indian team for over a decade, is determined to make the most of his fourth Olympic appearance.

“I never imagined playing in four Olympics,” Manpreet shared with PTI Bhasha. “I am going to Paris thinking as if it is my last Olympics and I have to give my best. I haven’t thought about quitting the game yet and my complete focus is on the Paris Games.”

Leader’s mentality of Manpreet Singh

While no longer the team captain, Manpreet Singh’s leadership role remains undeniable. He aims to inspire the younger generation in the Paris Olympics squad. “Being a senior player, my role is to guide and motivate the youngsters,” he said. “Whether I wear the armband or not, the goal is to collectively strive for success.”

Overcoming Adversity

Manpreet’s career has not been without its challenges. Serious allegations levelled against him during the 2018 Commonwealth Games were a particularly trying period. “It was a devastating time,” he confessed. “I lost faith in everyone. The support of PR Sreejesh, my family, and the team was instrumental in helping me overcome that phase.”

Drawing parallels with cricketer Hardik Pandya’s comeback, Manpreet emphasized the importance of team support during tough times. “When the team stands united, it provides immense encouragement and strength to bounce back,” he added.

Humble Beginning for India Hockey Team star

Reflecting on his journey, Manpreet expressed gratitude for his humble upbringing. Hailing from a family that faced financial hardships, his determination to succeed was fueled by his father’s dreams. “My father worked as a carpenter, and my mother struggled to make ends meet,” he revealed. “My brothers also played hockey but had to quit due to financial constraints. Today, when I look back, it all feels surreal.”
