Shaheen Afridi’s disrespectful comment to Pakistan batting coach reason behind Wahab Riaz’s sacking?

Wahab was named Pakistan's chief selector in November 2023 and announced as the senior team manager in April 2024.

All hell is breaking loose in Pakistan Cricket. Following the 2024 T20 World Cup debacle, finger-pointing has started. Chief selector and senior team manager, Wahab Riaz, was sacked due to their group stage exit and his non-action on Shaheen Afridi’s misbehavior with the coaches and management.

Shaheen Afridi lashes out on Mohammad Yousuf

What exactly did Shaheen say that led to Wahab’s sacking? The left-arm pacer told interim batting coach and former Pakistani great Mohammad Yousuf to ‘mind his business’. During their tours of Ireland and England, Yousuf traveled with the Pakistan cricket team, and it was then that Shaheen said these words.

A source told Geo News that during a practice session at Headingley, Shaheen kept overstepping. Yousuf pointed out to the pacer that he should focus on staying behind the line, to which the agitated pacer let the coach have it. “Shaheen said to Mohammad Yousaf to let him do what he was doing, and he (Yousuf) should mind his own business.”

Afridi reprimanded for outburst

The accident was a heat-of-the-moment thing and therefore wasn’t reported to the PCB. However, Wahab let him have an earful, following which the pacer also apologized to the batting coach.

“This was nothing more than routine case of heat-of-the-moment, so the chapter was closed there and then. See, when you are on a tour for months, these minor heated arguments happen; these are routine matters; there was nothing big as far as I know which required any strict action against anyone,” the source added.
