Spain’s captain, Alvaro Morata, has ignited controversy with his remarks about his national team ahead of their crucial EURO 2024 semi-final clash against France. Spain, emerging as the tournament favourite, has enjoyed a stellar run, notably eliminating Georgia and then the host nation, Germany, in the quarter-finals. The team’s blend of youthful exuberance and seasoned experience has positioned them as top contenders.

In an interview with “El Mundo,” Morata revealed his intention to possibly retire from the national team after the tournament. “I will probably leave the national team after the Euro. I will be able to leave the national team after the Euro.” said Morata.

However, Spain faces a formidable challenge in the semi-final against France, known for their robust defensive play. This match, featuring two of the tournament’s favourites with contrasting styles, is set to be pivotal. On the eve of this high-stakes encounter, Morata made headlines with his unexpected criticism of his home country, adding tension to the Spanish camp.

He expressed frustration with the constant scrutiny and criticism he faces in Spain, stating, “It is true that in Spain it is very difficult for me to be happy. In the end, something always comes out somewhere.”

Morata elaborated on a recent incident where a simple gesture to journalists led to widespread criticism. “The other day for making a gesture to the journalists, simply by whistling, a gesture that I thought would remain between us, because a journalist brought it up […] It was just a gesture, but some took advantage of it to criticize, as always.”

The semi-final match will not only test the tactical prowess of both teams but also the mental resilience of the Spanish squad amidst internal strife. Morata’s bold statements have undoubtedly added an extra layer of drama to an already thrilling tournament.
