Jay Shah set to become the next ICC Chairman? BCCI Secretary interested but yet to take a call

Shah joined the BCCI in 2015 and has held the position of secretary since 2019. If he becomes the BCCI President, he has to serve a 3-year term as the ICC Chairman.

Will Jay Shah become the next ICC Chairman? The BCCI Secretary, who has been a shot-caller for the organization, has a chance to rule over international cricket. The current ICC Chairman, Greg Barclay, was handed the role in 2020 and is eligible to contest for another term, but Shah decided to stand in the election for the position, and he’s likely to win unanimously. Barclay assumed the role following support from Shah and may just bow out if the BCCI Secretary decides to assume the role.

However, there’s a catch. Shah isn’t exactly thrilled with the new ICC Chairman, according to Cricbuzz. The job would require him to move his center from Mumbai to Dubai. The election will be held in November, and he has three months to decide whether he wants to take the next step. Jay Shah may not have decided to take up the role a while back, but after seeing the dumpster fire of the T20 World Cup 2024, which was held in the USA and the West Indies, he might just have decided to take the step.

Step towards becoming BCCI President

Mind you, the term will be for 3 years. The rule was changed earlier in the year, as previously a person could hold the position of ICC Chairman for three terms of 2 years, while now it’s two terms of 3 years. That means that when Jay Shah’s first term as the ICC Chairman ends, he’ll be eligible to become the next BCCI President.

According to the BCCI’s constitution, one needs 9 years of experience as a member of a governing body to have a chance to reach the apex of the BCCI. With Shah becoming the Secretary in 2019, by 2028 his 3-year term as ICC Chairman will end, and he’ll get a shot at becoming the head of the most powerful cricket board in the world.
