Temba Bavuma returns as captain, Marco Jansen rested in South Africa squad for Tests vs West Indies

Last played against New Zealand, the Proteas didn't fare well in the Test matches, losing 2-0 to the Black Caps. It will be interesting to see how they can turn things around against West Indies.

Cricket South Africa has announced a 16-member squad for a two-match Test series in the West Indies. The Proteas’ squad will be led by Temba Bavuma, who returns to captain the South African Test team. Bavuma last played a Test match against India at Centurion and is now set to lead the team once again.

The first Test match is scheduled to start from August 7 to 11 at Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad and Tobago, and the second Test will take place at Guyana National Stadium, Guyana, from August 15 to 19.

Batter Matthew Breetzke in, Marco Jansen is out

On one hand, batter Matthew Bretzke, who has already made his debut in T20Is, has now received his maiden Test call-up. Also, wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton is set to make a comeback in Test cricket after a one-year break, last played against the West Indies in 2023.

On the other hand, bowler Marco Jansen has been rested for the series. Jansen didn’t have a very good outing in the recently held T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies, especially in the later stages of the tournament.

‘The decision to rest Marco Jansen was taken to allow for a conditioning period aimed at ensuring optimal physical and mental well-being, given the season-long workloads.’ Coach Shukri Conrad said
