I was not feeling well: Ishan Kishan clears air on depression and mental fatigue

Ishan Kishan finally opens up on his mental health struggles, claims no one understood him after failing to get game time despite getting runs

India’s wicket keeper Ishan Kishan has been in the limelight off late. The southpaw was snubbed off his BCCI Central Contract for the current year, after refusing to play domestic cricket, despite being asked to do so by the BCCI. But now, Ishan Kishan has opened up about his mental health and how he decided to take a break from the game.

Ishan Kishan was a part of the India squad for the ODI World Cup. But he featured in the opening two matches which Shubman Gill missed after being sick with dengue. Following the World Cup, Ishan travelled to South Africa, but took a break midway into the series, citing metal fatigue.

After coming home, he went Awol, and refused to play Ranji Trophy games for Jharkhand. Despite repeated suggestions by the BCCI and Rahul Dravid to play first class matches, he remained aloof and practiced in Gujarat with Hardik Pandya to prepare for IPL 2024. The BCCI didn’t take it kindly and thus he was snubbed off from receiving the central contract.

I was not feeling well

“I was scoring runs and then I found myself on the bench. These things do happen in a team sport. However, I experienced travel fatigue. It meant there was something wrong, I was not feeling well or right and so I decided to take a break. However, sadly, barring my family and few close people no one understood that,” Ishan Kishan told Indian Express.

Ishan Kishan went on to explain that he was not feeling well. He claimed that despite getting runs he was warming the bench and that took a toll on his health. He claimed that he was depressed and in that phase, it was only his family who understood what he was going through.

“[The past few months] were depressing. Today I don’t want to say that everything was fine. It was not easy for me at all. You go through a lot. Mere dimag mey ye sab chalta raha ki yaar kya hoga gaya, kyu ho gaya, mere saath kyu (Questions like what happened, why me). All these things happened when I was performing,” he added.

Ishan Kishan has no problem in losing out on his central contract. In fact he claims that he is giving his best and isn’t too worried about the future.

“I don’t want to be sad about anything. I’ll keep giving my best. I am not thinking too much about the future. I want to stay in the present. At this point, I am only focused on how to become a better and different player from what I was six months ago. I will work on a few innovative shots and my wicket-keeping,” Ishan concluded.
