Shubman Gill explains what ‘went wrong’ as India fail to chase 115 against Zimbabwe in 1st T20I

115 is the lowest total India has ever failed to chase down in their T20I cricket history.

Losing to Zimbabwe, who failed to even qualify for a 20-team T20 World Cup, isn’t the best way to start a captaincy career. But unfortunately for Shubman Gill, the newly crowned Indian skipper, that’s the way he’s kicked things off. Despite ending up as the India vs Zimbabwe 1st T20I’s highest scorer, the opener couldn’t get the win for the team as Zimbabwe claimed a low-scoring thriller in Harare by 13 runs.

Shubman Gill blames poor fielding and himself for India’s loss

After the match, Gill wasn’t exactly pleased by the performance. He talked about their poor fielding, which included an easy drop by Avesh Khan and other misfields. “We bowled well, but we let ourselves down in the field. Looked a bit rusty,” Gill said in the post-match interview.

He also referred to his dismissal as the point where India lost the match. “We wanted to take time and enjoy the batting, but it didn’t pan out that way. Halfway down, we’d lost five wickets. It would’ve been best if I’d stayed till the end. Disappointed with the way I got out and how it panned out,” he added.

All praise for Sundar

Although the defeat stung Shubman Gill, he didn’t shy away from praising India’s best player, Washington Sundar, who starred with both bat and ball. “Washi kept hopes up. When you have to chase 115 and your No. 10 bat is the one you want winning the game, you know something’s gone wrong.
