The excitement among Indian cricket fans celebrating their T20 World Cup 2024 victory is reminiscent of Argentina’s joyous scenes following their 2022 FIFA World Cup win. This was India’s first ICC title in 11 years, after winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. A large crowd gathered along Marine Drive, and it was growing by the minute. It appeared like the entire city of Mumbai has gathered around Marine Drive to greet the Indian players.

Scenes reminiscing of Argentina’s historic World Cup celebration

Argentina’s determined and talismanic captain Lionel Messi led an open-top bus procession to commemorate the FIFA World Cup 2022 celebrations. Argentina won their first World Cup on penalties, defeating France in the final, 38 years after Diego Maradona did so. La Albiceleste’s triumph sparked such fervour that the country’s capital, Buenos Aires, was surrounded by about four million people celebrating their team’s victory.

Following the procession, supporters and dignitaries assembled at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium to honour the Men in Blue’s triumph. The open-top bus, which bore the Indian team portrait from the T20 World Cup title celebration, is now at the Wankhede Stadium. The bus picked up the players at the NCPA (National Centre for Performing Arts) at Nariman Point and travelled for 1 and a half kilometre to the Wankhede Stadium.
