How is the Lord’s pitch tested?

Firmness Test

Two main things that always come under the eyes of Lord’s curators are the firmness testing of the pitch and moisture testing. Curators at Lord’s Test consider all such factors, and there are many methods they use to examine these two critical things.

One method involves the use of a penetrometer, which consists of nails, a tool used to measure the penetration resistance of the pitch surface. The higher resistance indicated by the penetrometer suggests greater firmness, which means the pitch is harder. This characteristic is extremely helpful for bowlers, as it can produce a jumpy bounce, swing, and even generate pace. Groundsmen insert the penetrometer into various spots on the pitch to obtain readings.

Moisture Test

Apart from hardness testing, another important factor is moisture testing. It should be noted that moisture on the pitch can depend on various factors, such as weather conditions and the duration for which the pitch is under cover. Groundsmen at Lord’s are seen using a moisture meter to directly measure the moisture content within the pitch surface. This helps in understanding whether the pitch is too wet or dry.
