How did Team India celebrate each of their ICC World Cup wins as Rohit Sharma & Co. return home?

Since Rohit and co. are all set to return to home soil after the T20 World Cup win, let's revisit all of India's World Cup victories and see how they celebrated them.

Indian cricket team, which recently hoisted India’s flag at Barbados Cricket Ground after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 final game against South Africa. Their victory against the Proteas in this mega event earned them their second T20 World Cup title and brought tears of joy to Indian cricket fans.

We saw many cricket fans taking to the streets and celebrating India’s win. Although this is not the first time Indian cricket fans have celebrated; there have been many occasions where Indian cricket fans have blossomed after winning the cup, whether it was the 1983 World Cup triumph under Kapil Dev, the first T20 World Cup win in 2007, or the 2011 50-over World Cup win after 28 years.

Every time, we have seen lot of people enjoying, gathering to meet the team bus, and creating a festive atmosphere. Since India is returning after clinching a T20 World Cup trophy, and the team will reportedly land in Delhi and then head to Mumbai on June 4. 1983 World Cup win

The 1983 World Cup win will always hold a special place in the hearts of Indian cricket fans. In 1983, when no one expected India to win, they achieved wonders after defeating the giant West Indies. Few people know that the Indian cricket board didn’t have much money to give to the players at that time.

It was then that the late Indian legend and Bharat Ratna awardee, singer Lata Mangeshkar, along with her brother Hridaynath Mangeshkar, organized a concert in Delhi. They raised 20 lakh rupees, which was distributed among all the players. The team also met the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Also, the Indian cricket team had an open bus parade when they landed at Mumbai airport, proceeding from there to Wankhede Stadium.

2007 T20 World Cup win

In 2007, when India won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup by beating Pakistan in the final, Indian players celebrated that achievement with an open bus parade in Mumbai. The parade followed a longer route (30 km), and fans got a chance to be part of the celebration from Mumbai airport to Wankhede Stadium. It was reported that almost a lakh of people took part in that celebration, and BCCI opened the gates for the public to meet their favorite superstars more closely.

2011 50-over World Cup Win

The 2011 victory was particularly special as it came on home soil. No one can forget MS Dhoni’s iconic six at Wankhede Stadium. The atmosphere across the country was nothing short of a festival, with streets filled with fans celebrating the win as if they themselves had played a part in the tournament. After the win, Indian captain MS Dhoni had a photo shoot at the Gateway of India. Since the team was in Mumbai, there was no bus ride, but the team met then BCCI President N Srinivasan. They also had a dinner reception with former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
