EXCLUSIVE: “I’ll be there..” Shashank Singh spills beans on his expectations for India vs Sri Lanka squad selection

Shashank Singh, the late-blooming star of the IPL, has set his sights on the upcoming Sri Lanka series after being overlooked for the Zimbabwe tour. The 32-year-old dasher, who impressed everyone with his finishing prowess for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) this season, spoke exclusively to InsideSport about his future goals and how the selection snub for the Zimbabwe series served as a “reality check.”

Despite his impressive IPL campaign, where he topped the run charts for Punjab Kings with 354 runs at a staggering strike rate of 164.5, Shashank missed out on a place in India’s squad for the Zimbabwe series. This exclusion, however, seems to have ignited a fire within him.

Shashank Singh working on the ‘process’

In his interview with Insidesport, Shashank outlined his plan for the upcoming months. He prioritizes utilizing the off-season to work on his fitness, fielding, and red-ball technique. He acknowledges his struggles in red-ball cricket last season and aims to improve his technique before the Ranji Trophy season kicks off in October. In the 2023/24 Ranji season, Shashank had an ordinary campaign, amassing 190 runs at an average of just above 31.

What I am looking forward to is the off-season. The next month is when I have to train very hard. I have to work on my fitness and my fielding as well. Then obviously, the domestic season is very big. I have to work on red-ball technique because last year didn’t go well, to be very honest,” said Shashank to InsideSport.

Shashank eye road to international cricket through domestic circuit

Representing Chhattisgarh in the Ranji Trophy remains a key focus for him. He expresses his readiness to grab any opportunities that may arise before the domestic season begins, but remains committed to performing well in the Ranji Trophy and ultimately returning to the IPL spotlight.

“From October 11th, the Ranji Trophy season will start, and most likely I’ll be there for Chhattisgarh. Before that, if some good news comes, I’ll try to grab it. But if not, again, I have the Ranji Trophy, and then IPL (2025 season).”

Despite the recent setback, Shashank maintains a positive outlook. “I am sure there is something very big waiting for me in the future,” he declares with confidence. “Because if I’m working on the process, I am sure the result will take care of itself.” Shashank’s dedication to self-improvement and his hunger for success suggest he won’t be easily deterred.
