End of era! Hours after the Indian cricket team lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy, Ravindra Jadeja has announced his retirement from T20Is. After Team India had defeated South Africa by 7 runs, Virat Kohli announced that it’d be his last time representing his nation in the shortest format after winning the ‘Player of the Match’ award, and captain Rohit Sharma followed suit, announcing his retirement in the post-match press conference.
Ravindra Jadeja ends on a high
Jadeja has represented India in 7 editions of the T20 World Cup (2009, 2010, 2014, 2016, 2021, 2022, and 2024), and 30 of his 74 T20Is came when he was playing in the mega-event. However, in the recently concluded 2024 editions, Jadeja wasn’t at his best. In the 8 matches, he scored just 35 runs and took just one wicket. Realizing he wasn’t able to perform at the level he and the team expected, he decided to bid adieu to the format on an all-time high.
In his T20I career, Jadeja took 54 wickets and scored 515 runs. A faithful servant of Indian cricket, Jadeja will continue to play ODI and Test cricket, with the Champions Trophy 2025 and the World Test Champions Final 2025 trophy as his next ambitions.
Jadeja took to Instagram to announce his retirement. “With a heart full of gratitude, I bid farewell to T20 internationals. Like a steadfast horse galloping with pride, I’ve always given my best for my country and will continue to do so in other formats. Winning the T20 World Cup was a dream come true, a pinnacle of my T20 International career. Thank you for the memories, the cheers, and the unwavering support,“ he wrote in a heartfelt post online.
