It’s just blasphemous to talk about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma‘s form in any given tournament. Over the last 15-16 years, the duo have been there for Team India in various capacities, and have continued to deliver. Talking specifically about the T20Is, Rohit is the highest run-getter in the format in the world, while Virat is just 90 runs apart. But all good things come to an end, and one has a feeling, their T20I careers, might just too, after the IND vs SA T20 World Cup 2024 final on Friday.
While there is no report suggesting the same, but fans, experts and ex-cricketers are almost predicting it. Of course, as discussed, no one can or should question their form, but perhaps the duo have had enough of the T20Is. And the result of the IND vs SA match won’t really matter, when it does come to this decision.
Next T20 World Cup in 2026
One of the deciding factors for Virat and Rohit taking the decision could be, the next T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and India is still two years away, in 2026. By that time, they would be 37 and 39, respectively. Fitness is not really an issue, but then it is more about giving a chance to the next generation. And that’s why the upcoming IND vs ZIM series would be of utmost importance.

In fact, they only returned in the T20I after a year, just in the lead up to the WC. They did not play any of the bilateral series’ in between, and directly forayed into IPL 2024, after IPL 2023. Once again, form is not the question, but their need in the T20Is now.
