The final group stage match of the ongoing Euro 2024 Championship took place on June 26 (Wednesday) as Turkey defeated Czech Republic by 2-1. A 94th minute goal from Cenk Tosun helped Turkey to seal their place in the round of 16 where they will face Group D winners Austria. The victory put Turkey in second place of Group F, behind Portugal.
However, Turkey’s celebration was cut short as, moments after the final whistle, a fight broke out between their players and some of the Czech team. The fight led to Czechia’s Tomas Chory being served a red card. On the other hand, yellow cards were given to Czech Republic captain Tomas Soucek and Turkish star Arda Guler.
With 14 other yellow cards and another red card shown during the fixture, it broke the record for the most cards in a single game in UEFA European Championship history (18).
Czech Republic knocked out of Euro 2024
Heading into the game, Czechia needed a win in order to make it to the knockout stage. Despite equalising in the 66th minute, the result means that they finished bottom of Group F with just one point.
On the other hand, If Turkey can continue its winning run, then they could meet England in the tournament with both sides on the same side of the knockout bracket. But, to do so both Turkey and England will need to reach the finals, beating other teams around them such as The Netherlands, Italy and Switzerland.
