While there is no doubt that Gautam Gambhir is in talks with the BCCI and other concerned people with the Team India, to become the next coach, his ‘demands’ are much in news these days. During his interview with the CAC, as per a report in the Navbharat Times, the 2011 World Cup winner has laid down five demands.
Gautam Gambhir’s Demands
It seems like Gautam Gambhir wants the full control of the team, without any interference. Then, he wants to pick up his own support staff. Another one was a separate team for the Tests. And another one was, he would be preparing the road map for the 2027 World Cup already.

But the fifth demand seems to be the deadliest one. The report states that Gautam Gambhir wants the four senior players — Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami — to consider the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan as their last tournament, if they fail to lift the trophy. However, there was no mention of dropping them from all three formats.
No Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma in Gautam Gambhir’s Team India?
While no one really knows how much value does the report hold, but if it is indeed true, then Team India would be looking at a few immediate problems to resolve. Firstly, they would have to make it clear to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, as to what formats will they be playing. Then finding a replacement for the two legends will be no mean task. Who would be the Team India captain, would be another issue that Gambhir would have to deal with.
Also, let’s assume that Team India wins the Champions Trophy 2025, but would Virat and Rohit be still considered for 2027 World Cup, which is still three years away. Virat would be 38 by then and Rohit would be 40.
