Kylian Mbappe closes in on Euro comeback? France captain joins practice with taped-up broken nose

Kylian Mbappe trained alone at their base in Paderborn before joining the rest of his teammates in a finishing drill.

For the first time since breaking his nose in France’s opening match of UEFA Euro 2024, Kylian Mbappe returned to training on Wednesday. However, Didier Deschamps revealed his captain will need surgery at some point, most likely following the competition.

Kylian Mbappe makes anticipated return

Kylian Mbappe trained alone at their base in Paderborn before joining the rest of his teammates in a finishing drill. France are currently sourcing a custom-made mask for Mbappe. Mbappe was restricted to non-contact workouts and had wound-closure strips placed across his nose.

The 25-year-old forward from Real Madrid is anticipated to miss France’s match against the Netherlands on Friday in Leipzig, but the French Football Federation is hopeful he will make a significant comeback in time for the competition.

Surgery will be needed: Deschamps

Mbappe underwent testing at a hospital in Düsseldorf following his Monday collision with Austria’s Kevin Danso, and Deschamps stated that his medical team is still keeping an eye on him.

Even if there is not surgery immediately, he will have to do it after the tournament,” the France manager said.

This morning [Wednesday] he was already a little better, so we will see. We will follow it closely every day,” Deschamps added.
