Australia captaincy next for Marnus Labuschagne? Ace batter replaces Usman Khawaja as Queensland Bulls skipper

Usman Khawaja, the Bulls' fourth-longest-serving captain overall after Jimmy Maher, Stuart Law, and James Hopes, steps down from his position as captain after 37 Sheffield Shield and 33 one-day matches.

Star batter Marnus Labuschagne was named Queensland Bulls captain for the 2024–25 season, taking the place of Test opener Usman Khawaja. This move by Queensland cricket officials has given Labuschagne an advantage in his pursuit of an Australian leadership position.

Usman Khawaja, the Bulls’ fourth-longest-serving captain overall after Jimmy Maher, Stuart Law, and James Hopes, steps down from his position as captain after 37 Sheffield Shield and 33 one-day matches.

The CEO of Queensland Cricket, Terry Svenson, stated that Labuschagne, who turns 30 this weekend, is playing country cricket for Glamorgan in England and that this is the “perfect time” for him to demonstrate his leadership abilities.

The role is not new for Labuschagne though. He led the Bulls in one-day and Sheffield Shield matches against South Australia last season in the absence of Khawaja.

I’m greatly honoured to be appointed Queensland captain, as I know how much the Bulls mean to the fans around the state,’’ Labuschagne said.
