Australia secured a thrilling five-wicket victory over Scotland in their final Group B match of the T20 World Cup 2024, sending the Scots home and England into the Super 8 stage.
Scotland T20 WC dream run ends
Scotland needed a win to qualify for the Super 8 stage at the expense of England, the defending champions. Their dream run started brightly with a strong batting display, particularly from Brandon McMullen (60 runs off 34 balls) and George Munsey (35 runs off 23 balls).
The pair put on an 89-run opening partnership, setting a strong platform for their total of 180 runs.
Australia drop chances, but win
Despite Australia’s powerful batting lineup, Scotland’s bowling attack started well, dismissing David Warner early. However, Australia hung in there, with Travis Head (68 runs off 49 balls) and Marcus Stoinis (59 runs off 29 balls) leading the chase.
While Australia dropped six catches – a record for the T20 World Cup – their batting prowess ultimately proved too much for Scotland.
Tim David seals the deal
With the match going down to the wire, Tim David smashed a six off the penultimate ball to secure victory for Australia. This win ensures Australia’s is in form ahead of the Super 8s and also send England into the T20 World Cup Super 8. Three Lions earlier in the day defeated Namibia in a rain-hit match.
