‘Babar Azam to remain Pakistan white-ball captain’ despite potential early T20 World Cup exit

This decision to retain Babar Azam as captain suggests the PCB is looking for a long-term solution, with changes planned around him.

Pakistan’s underwhelming performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 might lead to an early exit, but Babar Azam is likely to retain his captaincy for the white-ball formats (ODIs and T20Is).

Changes expected in Team Pakistan

This decision comes despite Pakistan suffering two defeats – one against the United States and another against arch-rivals India. Their chase against Canada, a team considered an underdog, also wasn’t entirely convincing, with Pakistan taking 17.3 overs to chase down a modest target of 107 runs.

While Babar Azam remains at the helm, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to make significant changes to the team in response to their current struggles as per sources of Geo News.

The consultation is ongoing and it is not appropriate to discuss [the matter] further at this juncture,” Naqvi said.

This news follows a shift in stance from PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who earlier called for “major surgery” after Pakistan’s loss to India.

Mohsin Naqvi has since softened his stance, urging the nation to continue supporting the team during the tournament. He acknowledged ongoing consultations but refused to divulge further details at this stage.

This decision to retain Babar Azam as captain suggests the PCB is looking for a long-term solution, with changes planned around him. Whether these changes will be enough to salvage their T20 World Cup campaign remains to be seen, but Pakistan fans can expect a revamped white-ball team under Babar’s leadership in the future.
