Batters to hit T20 World Cup century

Of course, it’s the ‘Universe Boss’ Christopher Henry Gayle, who also happens to be the first centurion in the tournament’s history. The legendary left-hander opener smashed a whirlwind 117 (57) in the opening match of the 2007 event against the Proteas. Nine years later, the Jamaican repeated the heist against England at the Wankhede Stadium, as he smashed a 48-ball ton with the help of 11 sixes.

Overall, nine batsmen have smashed a ton in a T20 World Cup match. India’s Suresh Raina is the sole representative for the Men in Blue. The left-hander hammered a match-winning 60-ball 101 against South Africa in 2010.

In the past two World Cup events, we have seen three batsmen rack up a ton. While England’s Jos Buttler joined Alex Hales (116 off 64 vs. SL in 2014) to become only the second Englishmen to hammer a hundred in the prestigious event when he scored a match-winning 67-ball 101 against Australia in 2021.

The previous edition held in Australia saw South Africa’s Rilee Rossouw (109 off 56) and New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips (104 off 64) rack up a three-figure score against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka respectively.

Other centurions include Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal (103 off 63 vs. Oman in 2016), Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene (100 off 64 vs. Zimbabwe in 2010), Pakistan’s Ahmed Shehzad (111 off 62 vs. Bangladesh in 2014), and New Zealand’s Brendon McCullum, who hammered a breathtaking 58-ball 123 against Bangladesh during the 2012 editi0n.
