T20 World Cup Group B Super 8 qualification scenario: England-Scotland fight for last spot, Australia through

What do teams in Group B - Australia, England, Oman, Namibia and Scotland - need to do to qualify for Super 8 stage of T20 World Cup?

The 2024 T20 World Cup has witnessed some surprising turnarounds, particularly in Group B. Scotland and England are fighting for the last spot from Group B for Super 8. Australia, meanwhile, have powered into next round already.

With the first half of group stages now almost over, qualification for the Super 8s hangs in the balance for several teams. Let’s delve into the qualification scenarios for each team in Group B, analyzing their chances and the factors that will determine their fate in the tournament.

Group B Points Table:

1. Australia (Q) — 6 points (+3.580)

2. Scotland — 5 points (+2.164)

3. England — 3 points (+ 3.081)

4. Namibia (E) — 2 points (-2.098)

5. Oman (E) — 0 points (-3.062)

T20 World Cup Qualification scenario for Group B to Super 8

Scotland (5 points, +2.164 NRR):

Scotland, have defied expectations with two convincing wins. They’ve already secured a strong position, but win against Australia guarantees their Super 8s spot. Even a loss wouldn’t necessarily knock them out, but their Net Run Rate (NRR) could become crucial in a tie-breaker scenario.

A washed out match will mean everything to Scotland at this point as they will go through if weather gods show no mercy in their last group stage match.

Australia (Q) — 6 points (+3.580)

The current ODI and World Test champions, Australia, have secured the berth for Super 8. There last match is against Scotland where the team wull focus on rotating the players.

Namibia – 2 points (-2.098) (E)

Namibia’s qualification chances are over for good. They secured just one win that too against Oman in this T20 World Cup 2024.

Their last match in the group B is against defending champions England. Team from AFrica will play for pride against Jos Buttler’s men.

England – 3 points (+ 3.081)

The defending champions, England, find themselves in a precarious position. They need to win their last match against Namibia. However, qualification isn’t solely dependent on their own results. They can reach to a maximum of 5 points.

The Jos Buttler-led side also need Scotland to lose their final match against Australia. Even then, England will need a significant improvement in their NRR to overcome Scotland’s current advantage.

Oman – 0 points (-3.062) (E)

Unfortunately, Oman has already been eliminated from Super 8 contention in Group B. They haven’t been able to register a win in their four matches and their NRR is also on the lower side.
