Raina, who received a wildcard entry in the tournament was looking to emulate her compatriot Karma Thandi, who won the first round match. However Raina never settled in the contest against the fourth seed Tatjana Maria, who dominated the Indian throughout. The 29-year old Indian opted to serve first and her first service game was broken by Maria, who is a Wimbledon semifinalist this year. From then on it was a one-way contest as Maria broke back the Indian thrice in the set to win the first set 6-0.
In the second set too the one way traffic continued as Maria took a quick 2-0 lead. However, the Indian managed to show some fight as she took few games to deuce but lacked the final punch as she failed to hold her nerves to close out the set in her favour. Raina conceded too many unforced errors and struggled particularly with her drop shots as she gifted points to the German.
Ankita finally managed to hold her very own service game in the fifth game of the set but it remained her only hold over the 35-year old as the German comfortably won the second set 6-1 by breaking Raina’s serve yet again to finish the contest and advanced to the second round. Maria will next face Nadia Podoroska for a spot in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
