2023 ODI World Cup: After refusing to take the New Zealand national contract, Rajasthan Royals (RR) left-arm pacer Trent Boult has expressed his “big desire” to play the ODI World Cup 2023 in India later this year. Boult had given up the contract in August 2022 to spend time with his family and had wished to play franchise cricket all over the world instead of representing BlackCaps under a contract. “We’ll see how that unfolds: there’s still a bit of movement in the landscape at the moment.” he said on the prospect of his selection for the upcoming Men’s ODI World Cup 2023. Boult expresses his desire to play 2023 ODI World Cup

Boult has not been picked nor he has wished his desire to play for the Kiwi’s since since the T20 World Cup 2022. The NZ selectors have taken a clear decision to go with the contracted players and provide them with more opportunities.

While speaking with ESPNcricinfo, the 33 year old pacer on the sidelines with Rajasthan Royals during his Indian Premier League stint said that he’s still “uncertain” and will see how it “unfolds” after his decision to become a freelance cricketer.

“I’ve still got that big desire to play for New Zealand. It is what it is: I’ve made my decision. I’ve been lucky enough to have a 13-year career in the Black Cap and hey, I’ve still got a big desire to play in the World Cup as well.”

“We’ll see how that unfolds: there’s still a bit of movement in the landscape at the moment.”

On NZ’s 2019 campaign and Kane Williamson

New Zealand had fell short in two consecutive finals but the close loss to England in the 2019 World Cup final still haunts the Kiwi’s but Boult feels that the team would put those past defeats to the side and have a great chance of going all the way this time.

“I remember after the 2019 final, I said to Kane [Williamson] that we’ve got to be there again, come 2023 in India. It’s a shame with what’s going on with his knee but he’ll be working as hard as he can to try and get there. It’s such a great tournament… One hundred percent, I’ve got that desire to be out there,” he said on the former skipper Kane Williamson’s injury and him potentially missing the big event.

“We’re a great one-day side. We’ve got some players that have travelled to India and experienced the conditions a lot, and that’s what it comes down to in World Cups. You can’t buy experience, and you can’t replace players that have toured for however many years across these conditions.” said Boult on the importance of experience in the big events.

“It’s an interesting time for both franchise and international cricket, I reckon. The leagues – there’s a lot of movement happening in that space, but the golden question is what it’s going to look like in a couple of years.” said the seamer when asked about the how franchise cricket and international like look like in a few years.
