Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and Amnesty International have reported that same-sex relationships in the country could lead to criminal charges, with a maximum prison sentence of seven years. In such a situation, the LGBTQ+ fans who had already booked their flights and match tickets have found themselves in a spiral of uncertainty, with hotels being hesitant to accept their reservations.

Daily Mail claims Swedish and Danish journalists tried to call hotels in Qatar to book reservations under the guise of a gay couple, and the responses were not encouraging at all. “If you put on make-up and dress gay, it goes against the country’s and the government’s policy. For our hotel, it’s okay (only) if you dress appropriately and do not exhibit sexual behaviour or kiss in public,” said one hotel.

I would like to inform you that we have previously had incidents where the police have picked up Qataris at the hotel who have had homosexual relationships,” another hotel stated, explaining why they are hesitant and book reservations for LGBTQ+ fans.
