Koeman is a vastly experienced manager, having previously managed the Netherlands for two-and-a-half years, during which the boys in orange reached the final of the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League. However, the 59-year-old’s last managerial stint with Spanish giants Barcelona was nothing short of a nightmare, though the Catalans lifted one trophy under his tutelage in the form of Copa del Rey.

As for van Gaal, he has confirmed that his diagnosis was not known to the Dutch players until now. “I didn’t want to tell it to my players because it could have influenced their performances. In each period during my time as manager of the national team, I had to leave in the night to go to the hospital without the players finding it out until now. While thinking I was healthy, but I am not,” he said on a Dutch television show.
