‘2-0 against BazBall’ Nathan Lyon rubbishes England dominating Australia stance

‘2-0 against BazBall’ Nathan Lyon rubbishes England dominating Australia stance

Nathan Lyon has denied that 'BazBall' worked against them in the Ashes 2023, despite the fact that they squandered a 2-0 lead.

After getting ruled out of the Ashes 2023 series due to a right calf injury, Nathan Lyon has denied the idea that ‘BazBall’ worked against the visitors. Lyon, who only played the first two Ashes Tests before injury ruled him out, has said that ‘Bazball’ did not work against him in the two matches he played. Notably, Australia won the opening two matches and gained a 2-0 lead.

‘Bazball’, named after England’s head coach Brendon “Baz” McCullum, is a strategy adopted by the English cricket team with Ben Stokes as their leader. The concept behind England’s new strategy is to play attacking cricket with the bat and use conventional and unconventional bowling to disturb the opposition batters.

While speaking with Sen Cricket, the off-spinner said he wasn’t convinced by the idea that England dominated them. Nathan Lyon claimed England’s new all-out aggressive approach was a ‘lot of smoke and mirrors’.

“I know everyone keeps talking about BazBall, to be honest, I didn’t really see BazBall throughout my two Tests again them,” said Lyon.

Lyon bowled in just 66 overs in three innings and still ended the series in the top 10 wicket-takers with 9 scalps to his name.

“I think there’s a lot of smoke and mirrors with BazBall, if I’m being honest with you, and I feel like if you’re going to play an aggressive brand of cricket anyway, it’s about being able to go up and down in gears and understanding the moments in the game.” the spinner said.

The veteran spinner cited David Warner as an example of someone who plays a similar style of cricket as England did in the Ashes 2023.

“I’m 2-0 in my Tests against BazBall I look at the Australian cricket team and the batters we’ve had, David Warner for example. I’ve seen him score hundreds in a session and that’s off playing an attacking brand of cricket.” Nathan Lyon further said.
