Sreeja Akula first Indian to win WTT Contender singles title, wins women’s doubles too

WTT Contender: After her maiden title in singles, Sreeja Akula's rank will skyrocket to 25th in the world.

Indian paddler Sreeja Akula has all the makings of a table tennis star, that the country hasn’t witnessed ever. On late Sunday night, she became the first from India to win a WTT Contender singles title in Lagos. If that is not enough, Sreeja landed a title in the women’s doubles as well, along with Archana Kamath, to make a double memorable outing for her.

A Shot in the Arm for Sreeja Akula Post WTT Contender Win

The day started well for Sreeja Akula in the WTT Contender women’s doubles as she beat compatriots Diya Chitale and Yasaswini Ghorpade, along with her partner Archana Kamath, 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 12-10). As the score suggests, it was a one-sided match with Sreeja looking to finish off things in a jiffy, and get ready for her singles finals.

There she got the better of Chinese teenage sensation Ding Yijie, who isn’t even in the top-100 at the moment. The Indian youngster beat her opponent 4-1 win (10-12, 11-9, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6). This title win shows a clear career progression for the CWG 2022 gold medal winner, who had won her first WTT Feeder tournament in January this year.
