Poland vs Austria Prediction: Marcel Sabitzer and co to edge past Lewandowski-less Poland in Euro 2024

Poland was without their star striker Robert Lewandowski against the Netherlands due to a thigh injury. They are hopeful he can feature on Friday

Poland will face Austria in their UEFA Euro 2024 group-stage clash at the Olympiastadion Berlin on Friday. Both teams are looking to bounce back after suffering defeats in their campaign openers, with Poland losing 2-1 to the Netherlands and Austria narrowly losing 1-0 to France. Ahead of the Poland vs Austria clash, let us take a look at the predictions.

Poland vs Austria Prediction

Austria is favoured to claim a significant win in Berlin, with the Opta supercomputer giving them a 46.4% chance of victory. Poland’s win probability stands at 27.5%, while a draw, which would not be particularly helpful for either team, occurs in 26.1% of simulations. However, with Robert Lewandowski back in the squad, Poland has the potential to spring a surprise. We at Insidesport.IN predict a narrow 2-1 win for Austria.

Poland form

Poland had a strong start against the Netherlands, with Adam Buksa giving them an early lead in the 16th minute following a brilliant corner kick from Piotr Zieliński. Cody Gakpo equalized for the Netherlands in the 29th minute, and substitute Wout Weghorst made an immediate impact by scoring the winning goal in the 83rd minute. Despite scoring first, Poland has only won two of seven European Championship matches (D4 L1).

Poland was without their star striker Robert Lewandowski against the Netherlands due to a thigh injury. They are hopeful he can feature on Friday. Poland has only scored more than once in one of their 15 previous matches at the European Championship. They have not gone consecutive tournament games without Lewandowski featuring since he made his international debut in September 2008. Fortunately, Lewandowski returned to team training on Wednesday, increasing the likelihood he will play in Berlin.

Austria form

Austria, also known as Das Team, put up a strong fight against France in their opener. However, an own goal by Maximilian Wöber condemned them to a narrow loss. Wöber became the first player in European Championship history to score an own goal, receive a yellow card, and be substituted off in the same game.

Despite the loss, Austria had more possession (52%), completed more passes (401 vs. 390), and made more passes in the final third (137 vs. 108) than France. However, they only managed five shots in total, their second-lowest in a Euros game after having four attempts in a 0-0 draw with Portugal in 2016.
