Venues ICC could prefer for India’s matches if Pakistan accepts hybrid model for Champions Trophy

Not hosted an ICC event since 1996. PCB is set to host the ICC Champions Trophy, but the question remains, Will they? What if India does not travel to Pakistan?

The Pakistan Cricket Board is set to host the ICC Champions Trophy, although there is significant resistance suggesting that the tournament might not be hosted entirely by Pakistan. Rumors indicate that India may not travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy in 2025.

Since the 1996 World Cup, which was held in India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, the neighboring countries have not hosted an ICC event together. While it is possible they may host this time, it might be under a hybrid model suggested by India. If a multi-country hosting is indeed on the cards, we should explore all possible venues that could host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 if Pakistan accepts the hybrid model.

UAE

One of the main venues anticipated by many is the UAE, where India have had mixed results. India has played a substantial number of ODI games, especially in Sharjah during the 1980s and 1990s. In recent times, the focus has shifted to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The Men in Blue have played a total of 36 ODIs in the UAE, winning 30 and losing 6.

In addition, numerous IPL games have taken place in the UAE over the past decade. This venue typically benefits both India and Pakistan. For the Pakistan cricket team, the UAE acts as a second home, where they have practiced and played many matches. There is a high possibility that the ICC may move India’s games to the UAE, which could be advantageous for both the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has been a favorite venue for India and possibly for the PCB as well. Interest in this venue was evident recently, as seen in 2023 when the 50-over Asia Cup took place. During that tournament, India emerged victorious. Initially, Pakistan was set to host the cup, but just a month before the event, the possibility diminished. Out of the 13 games, 9 were held in Sri Lanka and 4 in Pakistan.

It is understandable that the PCB is showing urgency in hosting events, but it is possible that these two venues could become important hubs for some games of the Champions Trophy.
