T20 World Cup: Nassau County Stadium in New York to be torn down in six weeks

The dismantling of the Nassau County stadium marks the end of an interesting chapter in American cricket. While the future of the pitches remains uncertain, the memories of the challenging wickets and the thrilling matches played here will surely stay with fans.

The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, a temporary marvel constructed in just 106 days for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, is set to be dismantled in just six weeks.

Farewell to fortress: Nassau County Stadium

Eisenhower Park, which housed the Nassau County Stadium and witnessed two weeks of high-octane cricket action, will soon revert to its original state. Public access will resume, with the once-restricted entry points opening their gates to all.

Fate of New York pitches remains uncertain

The future of the much-discussed pitches, known for their challenging nature, hangs in the balance. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has left the decision to Nassau County authorities.

The pitches, meticulously prepared in Florida with South Australian expertise, could be retained and maintained by the county, or relocated by the ICC to a location where they’d be put to use. However, the outfield will stay put.

No MLC games at Temporary Stadium?

Plans to hold Major League Cricket (MLC) matches at the stadium were met with a lukewarm response from MLC authorities and franchises.

While New York boasts the Mumbai Indians franchise (MI NY) in the MLC, owned by the Ambani family, a dedicated cricket stadium in the future seems more likely, but not at this location.

Puzzling New York pitch

The pitches at the temporary stadium have been a topic of debate throughout the Champions Trophy. While some teams, like India against Pakistan and South Africa against Bangladesh, found success defending modest totals, others chased down scores comfortably.

The average first-innings score was a mere 108 runs, with India recording the highest successful chase at 111 for 3 against the USA.
