After a solid IPL 2024, and an otherwise decent show in the limited opportunities he has gotten in international cricket, Sanju Samson is most likely to get a chance in the IND vs ZIM series, that will follow the T20 World Cup. Sanju, who is yet to play a match in the World Cup, is on chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s radar once again, and looks all set for a longer rope with the national team.

As confirmed by Insidesport, the IPL performers like Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy, Riyan Parag, and Mayank Yadav are set to be considered for the IND vs ZIM series, once the new coach, most likely Gautam Gambhir, comes in. Also, it goes without saying that the senior pros of the team including Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will be rested.
The IND vs ZIM T20I series starts on July 6, and the squad announcement is supposed to happen next week. And not just that, even Gautam Gambhir could have a say in the selection of the players.
“The squad is supposed to be announced by next week. But I’m not sure when as Ajit (Agarkar) could discuss a few names with the new coach. If the new coach selection is delayed, they will announce the squad any time next week,” a senior BCCI official told InsideSport.

It also remains to be seen whether the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav will be a part of team, as they too have had a long run, with the IPL 2024 and now the T20 World Cup. “All the players have had a long IPL and T20 World Cup. They all need workload management. Whether Rishabh will play in Zimbabwe will depend on his condition. Even though he was out for so long, he has been playing constant cricket since IPL,” the BCCI official said.
If that is the case, then most likely, the Indian captain for the Asian Games 2023, Ruturaj Gaikwad will lead the team once again, while making a comeback to the Indian team.
